A Message from the Chair

How to understand subjectivities remote from one’s own in time, space, or social location? How to evaluate divergent interpretations of the same text or utterance? How to reconcile cultural sensitivity with freedom of expression? All these questions have taken on heightened urgency as English confronts the structural racism of our world and our department. During 2020-21 the faculty have embarked on a series of workshops and dialogues on inclusive pedagogy, equity, and anti-racism in research, teaching, and service. In a tough year, we are having tough conversations. We’re committed to moving forward together and creating a community where all faculty and students feel welcomed and affirmed in pursuing their best work.
