Barbara Foster Schutz was a member of the class of 1954 who studied English and Theater on a full scholarship at Northwestern. She has donated to the university every year, often in spite of limited resources, in appreciation of that gift. She was a vibrant member of the North Carolina Poetry Society from the 1970s through the 1990s and a contributor to its contests and publications. She remains an active poet, blogger, and collaborator of North Carolina poet laureate Jaki Shelton Green. She spent many years as a public school English teacher before devoting her career to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, as a founder of the public radio station WUNC and the Arts and Sciences Foundation.
