Natasha Trethewey's "Native Guard" included in list of the 100 greatest books by African American women
February 13, 2020
Natasha Trethewey's Native Guard, her 2006 collection of poetry paying homage to Black soldiers who guarded imprisoned Confederate soldiers in Louisiana, is part of the ZORA Canon, a list introduced in nearly 2020 by the website of the same name. "To our knowledge..." they explain, "no one has ever compiled a comprehensive list specifically featuring the finest literary works produced by African American women authors. We decided to undertake that effort both to honor that still underappreciated group of writers and to provide ZORA readers with a handy reference guide to their work."
